Viewing the manuscript catalogue records
The Haddād manuscript catalogue pages make use of Arabic characters and romanised transliterated characters. Many of these characters have no equivalent in the standard Western character set, so to display them correctly, a system of character encoding known as Unicode has been used.
Support for Unicode is better within some Web browsers than others. More recent browsers offer a generally good level of Unicode support. For the best results it is recommended that you use a browser such as:
-
Internet Explorer, versions 4 upwards
-
Mozilla, versions 1 upwards
-
Netscape, versions 6 upwards
-
Opera, versions 6 upwards
Which browser am I using?
To find out which browser and version you are using, select "About..." from the browser's "Help" menu. For most browsers this should inform you which browser type and version you are using.
How do I upgrade my browser?
To upgrade your browser, download the latest version from the browser developer's website. Latest versions of browsers may be downloaded from:
-
Internet Explorer: a version is available for Windows operating systems only.
-
Netscape: versions are available for Windows, Macintosh and Unix/Linux systems.
-
Mozilla: versions are available for Windows, Macintosh and Unix/Linux systems.
-
Opera: versions are available for Windows, Macintosh and Unix/Linux systems.
Alternatively, many computing and Internet magazines come with free CD-ROM discs which contain the latest versions of all browsers.
Help for Netscape 4x users
The Netscape version 4 browsers do not offer a high level of Unicode support. In some cases, characters may not display correctly at all and may be rendered as a series of boxes. Changing the page encoding manually to Unicode (UTF-8) will rectify some, but not all of the display problems. To do this, select the "View" menu from within Netscape, then
"Encoding", and select "Unicode (UTF-8)" from the list.
Viewing Adobe PDF files
The complete manuscript catalogue records are available as Adobe PDF files which are viewable on any computer, providing you have the Adobe Reader software installed. This software is already installed on many computers, but should you need to download it, it is freely available from the Abobe website.
