ScienceDirect

A good way to keep track of breaking research news is to sign up for tables of content alerts from key science journals. An example is Science Direct, the website of science journal publisher Elsevier.

UK PubMedCentral

PubMed Central is a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.
The full cost of scanning the back issues and creating the OCR and XML files is covered by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and in some cases, the Wellcome Trust and the UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).

The site offers full-text access to around 1.5 million full-text articles. There are full search facilities, allowing you to search with limits, searching within a journal or a particular time period.

A significant number of the journals are relatively recent publications going back to the 1990s, however back digitisation projects are resulting in some significant journals being released including: British Medical Journal, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Journal of Anatomy, Journal of Bacteriology, Medical History and Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Directory of Open Access Journals

Covers over 5000 quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. May be browsed by subject, or almost half of titles can be searched at article level.

HighWire Press

A combination of free full text journals and Pay Per View articles with a science focus.

BioMed Central

A resource of over 200 biomedical science journals the vast majority of which have free full text available.

Google Scholar

Multi-disciplinary resource. Ranks results by relevance. Provides mainly references and abstracts, and full text where available freely on other resources.

Free Medical Journals

Provides links to the full text of over 1800 medical journals.
