AIDS and syphilis: exhibition at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. Colour lithograph, 1995

In 1968, the original Wellcome Museum and Library were reunited and renamed the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. The museum was transferred to the Science Museum in 1976 which gave more room for the library to expand further. Numerous small exhibitions were arranged by the Institute from this moment to explore and advertise the rich collections within the library.

Dice representing gambling with health; an advertisement for the Genito Urinary Medicine Clinic (GUM) for treatment and advice on sexually transmitted diseases like Aids by The Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland, Belfast. Colour lithograph.

A network of GUM clinics was set up in 1916 in the UK. The NHS took over these services in 1948. The same system remains today, although the rise in viral infections and changing pattern of sexually transmitted diseases have meant the GUM clinics have adapted over time. The clinics now manage a wide range of sexual health problems.

A map of Ireland with figures and Aids helpline numbers; advertisement by the Southern Health Board, Dublin. Colour lithograph by Kieran O’Connor, November 1992
AIDS in Ireland reached an all time high in 1992 when it was estimated that more than 3,000 people in Ireland had been infected by HIV and more people were at risk than ever before including heterosexual people. Not surprisingly, numerous AIDS helplines have been set up to cope with the demand for information about sexual health.
