Research Pro frequently asked questions
What is Research Pro?
Research Pro allows you to search multiple resources simultaneously through a single interface. It is a cross-search tool that builds on its predecessor, MetaFind.
The Library provides search access to around 30 resources, including those produced by the Wellcome Library, as well as external resources such as Medline, Early English Books Online and the Lancet backfiles.
When should I use Research Pro?
Research Pro can be a useful starting point to get an overview of your subject and orient yourself with some of the resources available. It is not as sophisticated as the search interface of the individual databases and Research Pro is not intended to act as substitute for the rich search functionality of the original vendor-supplied database
interface.
How do I access Research Pro?
As certain subscription services are only available to on-site users, the Library currently provides two different versions of Research Pro. You will be directed to the appropriate version depending on whether you are on site or off site.

Is there a limit to how many resources I can search at once?
No. However, the more resources you select, the longer it will take for Research Pro to search. To help users select the most appropriate database, similar resources in Research Pro have been categorised together.
Can I search by resource type?
To help users select the most appropriate database, similar resources in Research Pro have been categorised together under four general headings:
-
Wellcome resources
This includes the Library catalogue, the images and archives databases, plus the three gateway services (MedHist, Psci-com and BioethicsWeb) that the Library has created.
-
Biomedical resources
This collection includes databases like Medline, CINAHL and Health Reference Center.
-
History of medicine resources
Here we have included some of the Wellcome catalogues, plus resources such as the Lancet backfiles and the RLG History of Science, Technology and Medicine database.
-
Other resources
This collection contains other library catalogues, such as the British Library and COPAC, as well as a database of newspaper articles and Google.
Can I create my own resource types?
You can create your own groups of databases to search. From the simple or advanced search page use the check boxes to select a group of databases and then click Save group.
How can I see more records?
When you run a search on Research Pro it will report back how many hits were found on each target database. By default Research Pro will return up to 40 citations per source. Use the pager in the top right-hand corner of the results to move forwards and backwards among the results. When you go beyond the first 40 citations retrieved, Research Pro will bring back more results.
You can also change the default setting so that 5, 10, 25 or 50 citations are displayed per page.
Feedback
We are always interested in your feedback. If you have any comments to make on Research Pro please email the e-Strategy Team: SystemsStrategy@wellcome.ac.uk.
