The Wellcome Library is currently assessing various digitisation options. One idea that has been the subject of considerable discussion is whether the Library should embark upon a project to create online digital surrogates of the most sought-after manuscripts in its collection.

To help answer this question the Library created a digital version of one of its manuscripts - WMS.8004: the 'physician's handbook'. Input was sought - via on online questionnaire - on whether this approach met user needs. Read the results of the survey [PDF 348KB].

Turning the Pages, our latest digitisation project, uses interactive technology to allow users to virtually 'turn' the pages of three significant texts from the Library collections: Wellcome 'Apocalypse' [Western MS 49], 'Nujum al-'Ulum' ('Stars of Sciences') [Persian MS 373] and Robert Willan's 'On Cutaneous Diseases'. Again, we are seeking user feedback about this project via an online questionnaire.

The Library’s first venture into full-text digitisation is underway with the 74 17th century manuscripts from our collection of 17th century English receipt books. These contain household medicinal and culinary recipes, usually written by women.
