Imaging services
The Library offers a number of ways that readers can make copies from items in its collections, appropriate to the age, size, format and condition of each item.
Before you begin copying, please familiarise yourself with the Library's handling and copyright guidelines. These are displayed in Copy Services and the Rare Materials Room.
Self-service copying
Self-service scanners are provided in Copy Services and the Rare Materials Room. The scanners have replaced the photocopiers previously offered.
The Library has a range of electronic text and image resources which are freely available to registered users. Please help us to preserve our collections by checking to see if the item you wish to copy is available electronically before making your own copy from an original document. Staff will be happy to advise you where and how to check.
Always observe copyright law and remember that you may only make copies for the purposes of research for a non-commercial purpose or private study. You must not reproduce or distribute images taken for personal use. For further detail on copyright please consult the posters in the Library.
Within Copy Services, scanned images can be printed to black-and-white printers or saved (in colour) to memory stick. The Rare Materials Room scanner offers a save option only.
You can charge your Library Card using the kiosk in Copy Services. This credit is also used to pay for printing from the network printers.

Copyright guidelines
Self-service copying is permitted in the Wellcome Library provided that users keep within copyright law.
It is an offence to break copyright law. It is your responsibility to ensure that your copying is legal.
Library supervisory staff can advise on the physical handling of material and on whether copying would damage it, but cannot offer legal advice.
If material is in copyright, you may make single copy for the purpose of private study or research for a non-commercial purpose. You may not:
-
copy more than a fair and reasonable proportion of an item in copyright, unless the copyright holder has authorised you to do so
-
make multiple copies, unless the copyright holder has authorised you to do so
-
mount digital copies on a network (which includes the internet), unless the copyright holder has authorised you to do so.
You should acknowledge the copyright holder's rights in any use that you make of your copies.
