Archive and manuscripts surveys

The Wellcome Library gathers information about archive and manuscript material relevant to the history of medicine held in other locations. Several different surveys exist to monitor the location of different types of material within the UK. These include:

  • Medical Archives and Manuscripts Survey (MAMS)
Gathers information on all types of medical and health-related records, 1600-1945; currently includes material held in repositories in the Greater London area, with the intention that it will cover the rest of the country in due course.
  • Hospital Records Database
A database of information about hospital records, mainly those deposited in public repositories or administered by health authority archivists, carried out jointly with the National Archives. Now available online for simple name and town online searches.
  • Historical Records of the Pharmaceutical Industry in Britain
A database recording a national survey of records relating to the pharmaceutical industry, including those still held by businesses as well as those in public repositories; carried out by the Business Archives Council with funding from the Wellcome Trust.
  • Historical Records of Veterinary Medicine
A database recording a national survey of veterinary practices, organisations, industry and academic institutions with records of veterinary medicine dating from earliest times to date; carried out by the Business Archives Council with funding from the Wellcome Trust.

The Library produces annual summaries of its archival acquisitions and this information is also sent to the National Register of Archives.
